College - Chapter 4

There was a knock on the door of my dorm.
"What?" I said, my face buried in my pillow.
Ayumi cautiously opened the door, "Angie? Are you mad?"
Before I could answer, Chris came in and crossed his arms.
He said sharply, "You shouldn't be. I'm sorry if we embarrassed you, Angie, but you shouldn't be ashamed of your friends."
"You're not my friends," I said, "You're my brother and my roommate."
Ayumi sniffed, "Y-you mean.... You don't like us?"
"No, not really." I said cruelly, "I'm stuck with you guys. You're embarrassing and childish and I've made no friends because of you."
"Well," Ayumi said, "Maybe if you opened your eyes, you could see that you do have friends. Or at least people who care about you."
I scoffed, "You sound like a fortune from a fortune cookie."
Silence fell over the room for a long time. Then, Ayumi ran out of the room, crying.
"Now look what you've done." Chris said, shaking his head and leaving the dorm.
I realized that I shouldn't have said any of that. I was such a jerk.

When Ayumi came back later, I said, "Hey, Ayumi."
She ignored me and sat down at her computer, clicking play on the youtube window.
"Ayumi," I said, "Did you hear me?"
Still ignoring me, Ayumi put on her earphones and began watching Kannazuki No Miko, an anime that she had been very interested in lately about a lesbian couple.
"Ayumi!" I said, "Listen."
"What?" Ayumi said, annoyed, "Can't you see I'm working?"
"That's not working, Ayumi," I said flatly, "That's wasting your life watching yuri anime."
Crap, I knew the official term.
I continued, "Look, um, I'm sorry."
Ayumi turned around and waited.
"Uh..." I said, "I was a jerk. I shouldn't have said that you and Chris weren't my friends. I like you guys."
Lie.
Ayumi smiled, "Oh, I knew you weren't a baka!"
She hugged me and I said, "What?"
"Oh, never mind." Ayumi said nervously.
She let go of me and handed me a manga book, "You should read this."
I studied it and said, "I don't know how. It's backwards."
Ayumi laughed, "I can show you."
We sat down and Ayumi showed me how to read manga books. It was kind of fun, actually. I felt really bad for not liking her.

She was kind of sweet when she wasn't so irritating.
