College - Chapter 3

I heard a knock on my door and I sighed, "I'll get it, Ayumi. It's probably my brother."
"Okay...." Ayumi said half-heartedly, sucked into her manga book.
I opened the door; What a shock, it was Chris. Bright-eyed, he said excitedly, "Hi, Angie!"
"Why, hello, Chris. What a surprise." I said flatly.
Chris showed me some CDs with an anime girl on it; She had green hair and headphones.
"Have you ever heard of Miku Hatsune?" Chris asked me excitedly.
"Um, no, actually." I said, "I haven't."
Chris pointed to Ayumi and said, "Ayumi showed her to me. She's a Japanese pop singer!"
I shrugged, "Well, that's probably why I haven't heard of her."
"She's really cool."
"That's nice, Chris." I said, smiling tightly.
Chris nodded, "Do you want to hear about her?"
"No, not really. Ayumi might."
Ayumi waved her manga book at us, "I'm reading about her right now! Miku Hatsune, the leader of Vocaloids!"
"What?" I said.
Chris and Ayumi exchanged a 'she's so lame' type of look and Ayumi said, "Um, the Vocaloids. They're a Japanese pop band."
"As interested in all this as you two are," I said, sounding bored, "I don't know anything about the subject and I have to study for the U.S. History test that's in two days."
Ayumi's face fell, "There's a test?"
Chris looked from her to me and said casually, "Oh, I already studied for that."
"Of course you did," I said, pushing him out of the dorm, "Now go away, I have to work."
I added, "And apparently, so does Ayumi."
Ayumi pouted and said in a cutesy voice with an annoyingly fake japanese accent, "Hai, Sempai."
I looked at Chris, confused, and said, "What is she talking about?"
"She said, 'Yes, Master.'" He answered with a shrug.
I didn't know whether she was mocking me or looking up to me or simply feeling sorry for herself. That girl is so weird and on top of that, she's turning my brother to her side. Fantastic. Well, at least he had a friend. I often wish that I could trade roommates with Chris, but then I remember what his roommate is like and cower. He smoked, he watched porn, he set things on fire, he probably did drugs too. Lovely.

I was sitting on a bench on our college's campus, reading my biology textbook, when Chris and Ayumi came up to me. I didn't look up immediately, hoping they would go away, but they watched me intently.
"Okay, guys," I said, standing up and closing my book, "I know you like each other and all, but don't you think it's a bit soon for marriage?"
I was making fun of them in reference to their 'we have big news' expressions.
At the same time, both Chris and Ayumi cocked their heads and said, "Nani?"
Whether I liked it or not, I now knew enough Japanese to know that 'nani' meant 'what'. God, I hated it when they spoke Japanese.
I shook my head, as if to say 'never mind' and sat down, "What do you want?"
Chris and Ayumi glanced at each other eagerly and giggled.
Annoyed, I said, "Chris, it's a little hot to be wearing a coat."
Chris shrugged, "Not for a guy who wears sweater vests every day."
Ayumi was also wearing long sleeves. To be exact, a long-sleeved schoolgirl-like costume with a white blouse with a red band around the sleeve, a short blue skirt, and yellow ribbons in her hair.
They grinned at me stupidly and I said, losing my temper a bit, "What?"
Chris and Ayumi looked at each other again and Chris said, "We want to show you something."
He took off his jacket and tossed it onto a bench. He was wearing a navy-blue suit jacket with brown pants, a white shirt, and a red tie.
I stared at him, "Oh no...."
Then, to my horror, they started singing. Badly. They were performing a type of dance that was mostly random, confusing hand movements and they were singing in Japanese. Nazonazo mitai ni chikyuugi o tokiakashitara minna de doko made mo ikeru ne...
It was a song that I unfortunately recognized; "Hare Hare Yukai" from the anime "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya".
I hated myself for knowing the song, but it's kind of unavoidable when you live with Ayumi Ichihara.
People were staring and pointing and laughing as my brother and my roommate danced and sang in their cosplay costumes. My face caught on fire as people I did and didn't know laughed at them and laughed at me just for being there.
I made up my mind. I stood up and stomped off before they finished their stupid dance.
"Angie, where are you going?" Chris called after me, "Come back, Onee-chan! We didn't finish the dance!"
I stormed away trying to ignore all the people who were laughing. Why were they so embarrassing?
